What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease condition in which one passes a large
quantity of urine which might be high in sugar content (in the case of diabetes
mellitus) or plain without sugar content (in the case of diabetes insipidus).
Types of Diabetes:
There are two broad types of diabetes; diabetes insipidus and
diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes Insipidus: this is a rare condition in which the kidneys
pass an abnormally large quantity of urine because a hormone called vasopressin
that regulates kidney function is deficient.
Diabetes mellitus: the patient suffering this passes urine rich in
sugar because of the large quantity of this sugar in the body. This type is
further divided into two types namely; type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2
diabetes mellitus.
In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the pancreas fails to produce enough
insulin (insulin is involved in the storage of sugar).
In type 2 diabetes mellitus, the cells of the body refuses to
respond to the action of insulin properly and this might lead to lack of
insulin.
Habits that cause Diabetes:
It had been proved that those that have any of their parents
suffer from diabetes have chances of developing the same problem. There are
several life’s habits that bring one closer to having diabetes especially when
the person have chances of developing diabetes. These habits or conditions
would bring one closer to having diabetes.
Alcoholism: This I term the most
dangerous of all other habits. In fact, most people that died of diabetes were
formally drunkards. Alcohol destroys many organs in the body including the
pancreas responsible for producing insulin. The weight on the kidney to dispose
the too much liquid in the body because of the intake of large quantity alcohol
weakens and destroys its cells. Also, heavy drinking can reduce the body’s
sensitivity to insulin. That is why alcoholism is too bad for your health.
Smoking/Tobacco: This is not good for
health in general and also not good for your kidney and pancreas. Tobacco use
increases the blood sugar level and lead to insulin resistance. So the more one
smokes, the greater the risk of diabetes. So quit smoking and live healthy.
Obesity: This had been known
to cause or lead to several diseases including cancer. Obesity causes the cells
of the body to become resistant to the action of insulin and this is not good
news.
Sedentary lifestyle: this is an act of not
involving yourself in any form of exercise. This also indirectly leads to
obesity. In a sedentary state, your body needs to work harder to absorb sugar
and make insulin and this can stress the cells involved.
Junk foods: A saying goes that
‘you are what you eat’. Junk foods cannot provide the required nutrients
therefore, one need to feed on balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables are
required in enough quantity.
